Laupäeval, 16. aprilil kell 12.00 kutsume kõiki, kes pole ükskõiksed Johannesi kalmistul Narva Muinsuskaitse Seltsi poolt korrastustalgu, et juhtida avalikkuse ja Narva elanike tähelepanu paikadele Narva sõjaeelse ajalooga seotud, Eesti muinsuskaitsekuu raames 2026. aastal.

Briti alama Walter Shawcrossi haua varemed asuvad Johannese kalmistul. Ta sündis Manchesteris 4. septembril 1837 (Venemaa Keisririikis oli vanas stiilis 23. augustil), abiellus Saksamaal Bremenis ja kutsus Ludwig von Knoop Narva Kreenholmi manufaktuuri esimeseks tehniliseks direktoriks, kus Shawcross töötas 1860–1892 aastatel, ja seal sai temast tegelikult narvakas. Walter Shawcrossi suri 25. märtsil 1900. Venemaa Keisririikis oli vanas stiilis 12. märtsil) ja maeti abikaasa poolt Narvas.
Narva Johannese kalmistule maeti ka üle kolmekümne Läti Vabariigi elaniku. Ajavahemikul 1915–1919 sattus Narva rühm lätlasi, kes põgenesid eelseisvalt rindelt. Pääseda õnnestus aga üksikutel: sõda Eestist mööda ei läinud ning lisaks puhkes 1919. aastal linnas tüüfuseepideemia. Ausamba ühishaua kohale püstitati 1934. aastal. Selle materjaliks oli Daugava kaldalt toodud kiviplokk, millele skulptor nikerdas leinava naise kuju. Kahjuks ausamba osaliselt hävis nõukoguajal vandaalide 1970. aastal poolt ja polnud pikka aega just kõige paremas korras. Ausamba taastati Narva Läti Seltsi ja Eesti Evangeelse Luterliku Kiriku Narva Aleksandri kiriku kogudusega. Ausamba taastas kuulus Narva kiviraidur Aleksei Kolpakov. Renoveeritud monumendi avamine toimus 2004. aastal, 70 aastat pärast selle paigaldamist. 2018. aasta novembris külastasid mälestussammast Läti Vabariigi 100. aastapäeva puhul Läti suursaadik Eestis ja Eesti Vabariigi president.
Läti ausamba läheduses on vanasti Heinrich August von Potti perekonna krüpt , mille ka vandaalid hävitasid.
Insener-polkovnik ja rüütel Heinrich August von Pott ise maeti 1862. aastal Peterburi Volkovski luteri kalmistule. Heinrich August von Pott alustas koos Heinrich Johann Hanseniga tööd Narva ajaloo uurimise ja säilitamisega.
Vandaalitsetud, kuid säilinud hauakivi alla maeti tema abikaasa Maria Christine von Pott, kes suri 7. septembril 1836 63-aastasena, ja poeg Georg von Pott, kes suri 1837. aasta mais vaid 26-aastasena. Plaadi allosas on veel kahe narvakade nimed:
15. mail 1832 Narvas sündinud Friedrich August Kühlewein ja surnud Narvas 27. augustil 1896 ning tema õde Caroline Marie Kühlewein, sündinud 2. mail 1837 Narvas ja suri Narvas. 17. augustil 1919. aastal. |

On Saturday, May 16 at 12.00, we invite everyone who cares, to the clean-up at the St. John's Church Cemetery near the Walter Shawcross monument, organized by the Narva Heritage Society (Narva Muinsuskaitse Selts), to call attention of the public and Narva locals to sites associated with the pre-war history of Narva within the framework of the Heritage Protection Month Estonia in 2025.
Gathering at 12:00 along the Narva-Jõesuu highway, parking lot on the corner of Väikesaare and Jõesuu streets.
There is the ruins of the grave of British subject Walter Shawcross on the St. John Church Cemetery. He was born in Manchester on September 4, 1837 (according to the the Russian Empire old style it was August 23), married in Bremen, Germany, and then had invited by Ludwig von Knoop to Narva to the position of first technical director of the Kreenholm manufactory, where Shawcross worked from 1860 until 1892, there he actually became a Narva local. Walter Shawcross died on March 25, 1900 (according to the the Russian Empire old style it was March 12) and was buried by his wife in Narva.
Also more than thirty Latvian were buried at the St. John Church Cemetery in Narva.
Between the years 1915 and 1919, a group of Latvians ended up in Narva fleeing the impending front line.
But few refugees have survived: the war has not spared Estonia, besides a typhus epidemic broke out in the city in 1919.
The monument at the site of the mass grave was erected in 1934.
The material for it was a stone block brought from the banks of the Daugava, on which the sculptor carved the figure of a grieving woman.
Unfortunately, in 1970 the monument was partially destroyed by vandals and was not in the best condition for a long time.
The monument was restored by the efforts of the Latvian Society of Narva and the community of Narva Alexander Church of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church. The monument was restored by the well-known Narva stonecutter Aleksey Kolpakov. The renovated monument was unveiled in 2004, about 70 years after its installation.
In November 2018, the Ambassador of Latvia in Estonia and the President of Estonia visited the monument to mark the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Latvia.
In the immediate vicinity of the monument, there was previously a family crypt of the Heinrich August von Pott family, also destroyed by vandals. The engineer-colonel and knight Heinrich August von Pott himself was buried in 1862 in St. Petersburg at the Volkovsky Lutheran cemetery. Heinrich August von Pott with Heinrich Johann Hansen together began work on the study and preservation of the history of Narva. His wife Maria Christine von Pott, who died on September 7, 1836 at the age of 63, and their son Georg von Pott, who died in May 1837 at the age of only 26, are buried under a vandalized but preserved tombstone.
There are names of two more Narva locals at the bottom of the plate:
Friedrich August Kühlewein, born in Narva on May 15, 1832 and died in Narva on August 27, 1896, and his sister Caroline Marie Kühlewein, born in Narva on May 2, 1837 and died in Narva on August 17, 1919. |
